Genesis means "In the beginning" in Hebrew and are the first words of the Bible.

The Book of Exodus derives it’s name from the "exit" of the the Israelites from slavery in Egypt.

The Book of Leviticus refers to the Levite priesthood made up of members from the tribe of Levi including Moses' older brother Aaron.

The Book of Numbers refers to two censuses Moses took to count the Isrealites.

Deuteronomy means "second law" and refers to Moses’ rehearsal of God's law delivered to the Israelites on the plains of Moab.

The Book of Joshua is named after the Israelite leader who succeeds Moses and conquers the Promised Land.

The Book of Judges covers 14 judges of biblical law who lead the Israelites through continuous cycles of prosperity, unfaithfulness, falling and repentance.

Ruth is a woman from Moab who serves Naomi, a Jew in Bethlehem and converts to Judaism.

First Samuel covers the first part of the lifetime of the last biblical judge Samuel.

Second Samuel covers David's reign over Judah and eventually all the land of a united Israel.

First Kings covers the end of king David's life with the House of David continuing its reign with Solomon and then Rehoboam and his successors only retaining control of Judah while Jereboam and a succession of dynasties control Israel in the north.

Second Kings continues covering a succession of kings in Judah in the south and Israel in the north.

First Chronicles lists the geneologies of Adam to king Saul.

Second Chonicles continues the story of First Chonicles with king David dying and Solomon taking over as a prosperous king.

Ezra marks the end of the Israelites captivity in Babylon and return of the exiles to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple after its destruction by king Nebuchadnezzar and purify themselves.

Nehemiah is a Jewish high official of the Persian court who helps rebuild the walls of Jerusalem anew and rededicate the city and it's people to God's laws after its destruction by king Nebuchadnezzar.

Esther is a Jewish woman who becomes the queen of Persia and prevents a genocide of her people.

Job

Job is a poetic book which seeks to answer "Why do the righteous suffer?" It presents a variety of perspectives to deal with a complex topic of suffering.

Proverbs is a book of wisdom which discusses values, moral behaviour, the meaning of life and proper conduct.

Ecclesiates tells the story of a king who relates his life experiences and draws profound, often self-critical, lessons from them.

Song of Solomon is a poetic celebration of romantic love.

Prophet Isaiah describes God's judgement and restoration of Judah and Jerusalem before and after the Exile of the Israelites to Babylon.

Prophet Jeremiah addresses the Jews in Babylonian exile holding them responsible due to pagan worship.

Lamentations is a collection of poetic laments for the destruction of Jerusalem by king Nebuchadnezzar and the Jew's subsequent exile to Babylon.

Ezekiel describes 7 visions of the prophet Ezekiel, exiled in Babylon, which center around God's judgement of Israel, nations and the future of Israel.

Daniel is an account of the legendary stories and prophetic visions of Daniel, a noble Jew exiled in Babylon.

Hosea is the first of 12 minor prophets and the book tells of the Northern Kingdom of Israel's decline and fall.

Joel is one of the 12 minor prophets and the book laments a plague of locusts and drought, promises future blessings and foretells coming judgement by God on Israel.

Amos is one of 12 minor prophets and a shepherd the who speaks against the injustice of the Northern Kingdom of Israel and about God's omnipotence and divine judgement.

Obadiah is one of 12 minor prophets who foretells the divine judgment of Edom, a kingdom south of Judah that plundered Jerusalem, and the restoration of Israel.

Jonah is commanded by God to prophesy the destruction of the Assyrian city of Nineveh but he avoids this mission and is swallowed by a great fish.

Micah is the sixth of 12 minor prophets who confronts the leaders of Israel and Judah regarding their injustices and prophesizes that one day God will rule in perfect justice.

Nahum is the seventh of 12 minor prophets who foretells God’s judgment of Nineveh, the capital of Assyria.

Habakkuk is the eighth of the 12 minor prophets who asks God to stop the injustice and violence in Judah and later learns that God will use the even more violent Babylonians to do so.

Zephaniah, whose name means "God is hidden", is the ninth of the 12 minor prophets and speaks of God's judgement of nations and also His restoration to peace and justice.

Haggai is the tenth of the 12 minor prophets who urges the rebuilding of the second Jerusalem temple after they have abandoned the work and predicts the downfall of kingdoms.

Zechariah is one of the 12 minor prophets and the book discusses the return from exile, the quality of life God desires and two prophetic oracles of the future.

Malachi is the final of the 12 minor prophets who calls upon the Israelites to reconnect with God who they have fallen away from. The book describes his prophecies in four chapters.
