Joshua Summary
The Book of Joshua is named after the Israelite leader who succeeds Moses and conquers the Promised Land. The story covers the conquest and partitioning of Canaan to realize the land God had promised Abraham.
Key people in the book include Joshua, Rahab, Achan, Phinehas and Eleazar. Events covered include the Israelites crossing the Jordan river with the Ark of the Covenant, entering the promised land, conquering Jericho and Ai and eventually dominating the region as a whole. The land is divided and distributed amongst the 12 tribes of Israel while the larger cities are set aside for Levitical priests who are not lawfully allowed to own land due to their priestly duties. Before Joshua dies he tells the people in the last verse 24:15: "choose you this day whom ye will serve… as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD".
