Leviticus Summary

The Book of Leviticus refers to the Levite priesthood made up of members from the tribe of Levi including Moses' older brother Aaron who are given instructions on how to worship God. God instructs the Isrealites and the first priests how to conduct themselves through law and ceremonial rituals. Among the most popular verses are "Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination" (Lev 18:22) regarding homosexuality, and "Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD" (Lev 19:28) regarding getting piercings or tatoos.

The Levite priesthood began with Moses’ older brother Aaron who was its first priest, and both of whom were descendants of the tribe of Levi. Other key people include Abihu Eleazar, Ithamar and Nadab. The book takes place during the month to month-and-a-half between the completion of the Tabernacle (Exodus 40:17) and the Israelites' departure from Mt. Sinai (Numbers 1:1, 10:11). Key people include Aaron, Abihu Eleazar, Ithamar, Moses and Nadab. The book consists of narrative history and provides details of ceremonial law. As a prophet of God, Moses provides instruction on rituals such as making sacrificial offerings on the altar in the tabernacle and conduct in ceremonies and celebrations. Rituals dealing with sin and guilt offerings provide the means to gain forgiveness for sins (Leviticus 4–5) and purification from impurities (Leviticus 11–16). Moses also consecrates Aaron and Aaron’s sons as the first Levite priests and provides instructions on maintaining cleanliness and providing guidance on conducting a holy life for all the people of Israel.
