St. Matthew

In Matthew 1:18-25 Mary has become pregnant and Joseph is considering parting ways with Mary to avoid public humiliation. Then an angel of the Lord appears to Joseph in a dream (as pictured) and tells Joseph: 'fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.' When Joseph awoke he accepted Mary as his wife and he and Mary would go on to raise Jesus as their son.

The Gospel of Matthew, like Mark and Luke, tells the history of Jesus and how he spreads the gospel, or teachings and revelation of Jesus Christ. The most popular verse from the book is this quote from Jesus' Sermon on the Mount reminding us to not worry about material needs: "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you" (Mat 6:33).
