St. John

John the Baptist (not to be confused with Saint John or John the Apostle) preached along the Jordan river and baptized followers in the river. He is described as a 'man sent from God' who was 'in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not ... as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God...' John foretold the coming of Jesus saying, 'He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.' When the priests and Levites asked John who he was he replied: 'I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.' The Gospel of John begins with the witness and affirmation of John the Baptist and concludes with the death, burial, resurrection, and post-resurrection appearances of Jesus Christ. It contains the most popular bible verse in the Bible, John 3:16: "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life", a quote from Jesus speaking to Nicodemus who was of the by-the-book Jewish sect of Pharisees who gave rise to the modern connotation of being a self-righteous person or a hypocrite. This verse has become celebrated as it represents a central to Christianity: that believing in Jesus and his Gospel of love and forgiveness provides a way for anyone, regardless of background or other circumstances, to achieve eternal life in heaven.
