Peter

Peter is lifted to be crucified on a cross upside down in Nero's Roman circus. A circus (from Latin, 'circle') was a large open-air venue used for public events in the ancient Roman Empire. This circus was located mostly in the present-day Vatican City where St Peter's church stands today. Peter alludes to his forthcoming death in 2 Peter 1:14-15 saying, 'Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me.' Crucifixion of St. Peter: Michelangelo Merisi, aka Caravaggio (painted sometime between 1593 - 1610)

Second Peter uses quotes from Jude identifies Jesus with God, and addresses a heresy which had arisen because the anticipated second coming of Christ had not yet occurred.
