Lamentations Summary

Lamentations is a collection of poetic laments for the destruction of Jerusalem by king Nebuchadnezzar and the Jew's subsequent exile to Babylon.

The book mourns the desertion of the city by God and its destruction. God does not speak and the degree of suffering is presented as undeserved. As well, the prospects for future redemption are seen as minimal.

According to religious tradition, in addition to the Book of Lamentations, the prophet Jeremiah also authored First Kings and Second Kings and the Book of Jeremiah.
