Exodus Summary

The Book of Exodus derives it’s name from the "exit" of the the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. Moses leads the Isrealites from Egypt to Mount Sinai where God provides instructions to build a Tabernacle and gives Moses the Ten Commandments as laws to live by. "The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace." (14:14) is the most popular verse in the book.

Key figures in the book besides Moses include Pharaoh and Pharaoh’s daughter, Moses' brother Aaron, Joshua and Miriam. Events covered include a chronological history of the Israelite's slavery in Egypt, Moses’ rise to leadership of the Israelites, the 10 plagues that afflicted Egypt after Pharaoh refused the Israelites their freedom, the departure of the Israelites from Egypt led by Moses, the parting and crossing of the Red sea by the Israelites, God giving Moses the 10 commandments at Mt. Sinai as well as the instructions for the tabernacle, the building of the tabernacle, and the formation of the priesthood of whom Aaron who becomes the first Levite priest and worship rituals formed and practiced among the Israelite people that would guide and sustain them while they wandered in the desert between Egypt and the promise land for some 40 years.
