In Daniel 5:1-31, King Belshazzar of Babylon uses sacred gold and silver vessels from the destroyed Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. A hand appears and writes on the palace wall the words "MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN." Daniel interprets this to mean that "MENE; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it. TEKEL; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting. PERES; Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians." Daniel was recognized and deemed third ruler in the kingdom. That night Belshazzar was slain and Darius the Median took the kingdom. Belshazzar's Feast: Rembrandt (circa 1635-1638) Image Source
