Peter is lifted to be crucified on a cross upside down in Nero's Roman circus. A circus (from Latin, "circle") was a large open-air venue used for public events in the ancient Roman Empire. This circus was located mostly in the present-day Vatican City where St Peter's church stands today. Peter alludes to his forthcoming death in 2 Peter 1:14-15 saying, "Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me."
