The Anointing of Solomon by Cornelis de Vos (c. 1630). According to 1 Kings 1:39, Solomon was anointed by Zadok. As king David grew frail his eldest living son (Solomon's half-brother) Adonijah was hosting a feast to celebrate a possible ascendency to the throne. However, Solomon's mother Bathsheba appealed to king David to have Solomon made king. So while Adonijah was feasting this annointing took place. Image Source

After two women give birth to children and one loses her child, she claims motherhood of the other woman's child. When the dispute is brought before king Solomon he suggests dividing the child in two. The woman who allows the child to go to the other woman so that it may live is given the child since Solomon sees her as loving the child more and therefore the likely mother.
